Streaming vs. cable/linear TV: Which technology is future-proof?
Evening television viewing used to be fixed: a few channels, a set program, end of story. Today, viewers decide for themselves what they watch, when they watch it – and on which device. Streaming services, media libraries, and traditional cable/linear TV are all competing for viewers' attention.
Streaming is booming – cable/linear TV remains relevant
The ARD/ZDF Media Study 2025 shows that streaming and online video services are widespread. Many people use multiple platforms simultaneously – an average of 2,5 per person. Public broadcasters' media libraries (ARD, ZDF, ARTE, 3sat) reach over 60% of the population aged 14 and over, thus surpassing many private streaming services.
Despite the streaming boom, linear television remains central, especially for older target groups: The daily reach of all media is 98%, the average daily media consumption is 6,5 hours per person, and linear television achieves peak figures among those aged 70 and over. Among younger viewers (14–29 years), however, non-linear usage dominates – streaming, online videos, and media libraries account for the largest share of video consumption.

In terms of sustainability, it is also worthwhile to stream consciously: streaming consumes significantly more energy than linear television.
